Hi John,Do you remember a(timid)british string player by the name of Antony Boast (B.1948 / Camberley-Surrey)? He used to come around/play at the Eel Pie Club(He also was handed E.C.'s guitar once at a gig cause he did not bring his own guitar), he played with Champion Jack Dupree for a while and disapeared to Belgium with his band The Junior Pilots. The story was that he was asked once to join your band but could not or didn't make the gig?I played with Tony for years-he was a great player and could play an awsome blues next to the multi-world string instruments he mastered. He passed away 10 years ago 16/02/2006.Greatings.B.J.

Hi John, The first time I saw you live was way back at the historic Golden Bear in Huntington Beach. I have been a huge fan of your music for as long as I can remember. Just HAVE to see you the next time you play southern California. I know you have played the Coach House and the Belly Up quite often. Wondering if you will or have considered playing at the Catalina Jazz Club in North Hollywood. Nice club that would seem ideal for you. I know I would be there!!!

Re John Mayall- The Blues Crusader by Dinu Logoz

Having seen the varied comments about this new book I decided to read it for myself over the holidays. Whilst it is undoubtedly largely a cut and paste from other sources it does have the merit of collating much of the more relevant facts and figures to provide a useful reference point with perhaps more relevance for newer fans. It does fill in the gap for UK fans in respect of the late seventies period when John was without a recording contract but clearly still actively touring with various line ups.
Written mostly in laudatory terms towards the end of the text a more critical and questioning tone emerges leading this reader to question whether frustration had crept in due to a lack of direct access to the subject himself, or perhaps a withdrawal of any limited cooperation? The author queries song choices on albums such as In the Palace of the King querying the wisdom of finally disbanding that incarnation of the Bluesbreakers whilst suggesting that disbanding was far from amicable. Most long term fans might more pertinently query why John had persisted with that stable lineup for so long a spell given his previous talent in reinventing himself through changes in band personnel.

In the end of the day the only person who can answer what few questions the author raises is John himself should he ever find time away from the road to write a definitive autobiography!

Finally, did laziness or lack of budget prevent the final print from being proof read? It contains many typographical errors throughout, one of the most glaring being several references to Bonnie Raitt as "Riatt"! Unforgivable.

I've been on a John Mayall listening marathon since I finished the "The Blues Crusader" book. Doing the original cd's then the reissues with bonus tracks......16 in all so far. Am convinced that John's lyrics on "Blood On The Night" from Diary of A Band- Vol.One are the best he's ever written! Check 'em out.....Tim

I suspected that book was like that. I am not going to buy it. Anytime an author hesitates in answering a question, is bad news.. He was asked more than once if john had any I put on book, he stalled on questions. So we are really reading nothing new at All ..

Roy Burton - Tue, Dec 15th, 2015 2:04 AM PST
The book Blues Crusader is good if you have not been a JM fan forever, it has been put together from Cuttings, Interviews, Cd and press releases all already out there and some things are not right, I am sure one day John will get his own book out.

Derrick - Sun, Dec 13th, 2015 4:47 PM PST
Hello John,

On the track "Don't Kick Me" from your 1967 record The Blues Alone, you achieve the most wonderfully rude distorted sound! Just fantastic! What was the amplifier used to get this sound (and guitar too)? Also, what was done to achieve that sound beyond turning the amp up to "10" because it sounds more distorted than simply plugging a guitar directly into a stock cranked amplifier? Did you plug strait into the amp or were you using a boost or possibly an amp modification to get this sound? I would be ecstatic to hear anything you can tell me about what amp this is and getting this spectacular overdriven tone.

Did John Mayall open for Johnny Winter at the Rose Arts Festival in Norwich CT in ~1985? If memory serves he did, and much to my surprise, he set up much of his own gear on roadies! And the show was excellent...both John and Johnny!

Happy birthday, John. I've been a huge fan of yours for over two years. It's not such a long time exactly—and you've heard this a million times; but your music has really made a strong impact on my life, as well as yourself. I've collected many of your records secondhand and I'm still not where I want to be. I'm a long road behind but I'm on the right side at least. I can't believe how powerful you still are up on stage, seeing you perform through many videos. You perform just as you once did in the seventies; and I'm happy to see that. I'm so grateful for your life and existence. And I'm waiting and have been waiting long for your arrival in New York and I'm so thrilled to hear that you will be playing here in March. My heart goes out to you and your family and loved ones. I love you, and all you've accomplished—thanks for making turning me to the blues. 💖

Hello John. Very happy birthday.

New Book! "John Mayall: The Blues Crusader" by Dinu Logoz

Finally, someone has written a detailed, informative and completely enjoyable book about John Mayall. John Mayall's Bluesbreakers served--and his current band still serves today--as a finishing school for great musicians and sidemen (Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, John McVie, Jack Bruce, Aynsley Dunbar, Mick Fleetwood, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya and others). Mayall's proselytizing the blues (he's 82 years old!), his songwriting skills and his other musical talents should not be ignored nor taken lightly.

Highly recommended!

Marcel regeer - Sun, Nov 22nd, 2015 3:12 PM PST
What a fantastic performer, singer. Long time ago, I think more than 25 years ago you performer in The netherlands, in Rijssen. I bought a cd and you wrote Some wordt for me inside the cd. Do you remember your performance in Rijssen, in the middle of nowhere?

Have just received my copy of "Blues Crusader" by Dinu Logoz from Amazon. What a great work on our favorite bluesman. It's about time there was a great serious history of Mr Mayall's life and music.

Thank you for your questions. The reason for the late vinyl release is that the vinyl pressing plants are 4-6 months behind due to demand, and we don't know of any plans in the works for another UK tour at the moment. John loves playing there, so hopefully it won't be too long! -

Alex Fisher - Mon, Nov 16th, 2015 9:01 AM PST

Dear John
I already thanked you personally for so many decades of beautiful music and great concerts just before the Zürich concert started, when you were selling cd's. You said I would enjoy the concert and I certainly did: the concert was fantastic! And now, nearly three weeks later, I still feel good and I know it will last forever.
I wish you all the best and hope to see you again in Zürich!

We checked with John on your question, and he doesn't know of any recording of him singing that song. We wonder if you're thinking of "The Laws Must Change?" That's the only song of John's that we can think of that could be confused with the one you mention. We hope that helps! -

Samantha Dubon - Sat, Nov 7th, 2015 9:08 PM PST

David Stevenson - Thu, Nov 5th, 2015 2:41 AM PST
What a great performance at Ronnie Scott's last night (Nov 4th first set). Your energy and skill are undiminished and you and your wonderful band seemed to be having such a good time too. I was so overwhelmed I didn't know what to say to you after the gig. Special praise for bass player Rocky Rzab but the whole experience was fabulous. I first heard you at the age of fourteen..."All Your love" from the Bluesbreakers album transfixed me and encouraged me to play guitar. I've been a Blues/Mayall fan ever since. Now at 64 I thank you for a lifetime's enjoyment. Please come back to London/Ronnie Scott's soon!

I noted your comment on Oct 10th. I do not think it's fair that every time a new CD or DVD is released some one uploads every track onto you tube. This means folk can get it for free with nothing coming to the artist. The latest is a free download of John Mayall: The Blues Crusader on you tube!

I have been listening to your music since I have been 16 thanks to an album of my parents. And now I' m soon 50.... We attended the concert in Zürich yesterday. It was great and a fantastic atmosphere. The bass solo was just awesome. And what other artist of your format is shacking hands with fans after the concert? Already looking forward to the next concert.

Also my best wishes for Johns birthday on 29th of November. I'll have mine the next day with a little difference of 20 years! ;-)
Hope to see you soon here in Zurich, I'll be there!!!

We are sad to say that you just missed John and the guys in California! They did a pretty comprehensive tour of the West Coast in July this year. There are no new plans to play here yet, but we all hope that it's not too long, as we loved seeing the shows! -

You're right that horn section were fabulous on Find A Way To Care, and we would have been very remiss had we not mentioned them on the cover! They're named on the last line of the inside left cover: Ron Dziubla (saxophones), Richard A Rosenberg (trombone), and Mark Pender (trumpet). -

Thanks guys, I was yesterday at your concert in Lausanne at the Docks, it was a crazily amazing concert, loved it!
I've been listening to your music since I was born, thanks to my dad. Shaking your hand yesterday was so great! I m 62 years old younger than you and I love your music, and you can be sure that I will keep on listening to it and so will my children! Your music really helped me during some very hard time I had, especially your 1969 album "Looking Back" with songs like "Jenny" and "Looking Back".

Keep on rocking, and thank you again!
